For many, Dailymotion is where to go for updates on the world around us. The site and others like it provide light relief, news, entertainment or a way to waste an hour when we should be working. A few videos are either useful enough or entertaining enough for us to want to keep. Here is how to download videos from Dailymotion, YouTube, Vimeo and other video sites.
How To Download Video From Dailymotion Using Chrome Extension

Dailymotion and other video platforms all use HTML5 format for their videos. While they are different websites and look and feel different, the underlying technology is largely the same. This makes life a little easier for us as we can use many of the same tools to download videos from any of them.
The one caveat is that Dailymotion blocks some of these download services and other sites block others. There may be a little trial and error involved in downloading your video. Where one technique may fail on one video site, it may work on another. That’s why I am providing several ways to download videos from Dailymotion and other video platforms.
Download videos from Dailymotion
Where you see Dailymotion, read YouTube, Vimeo, BBC, CNN and many other websites you frequent that hosts video. One or more of the following techniques will work on most of them.
Savefrom.net
Savefrom.net is my go-to website to download videos. It’s fast, easy to use and doesn’t try to trick or entice you to buy software or other stuff. All you need do is paste the URL of the page with the video and the site will do the rest. It analyzes the page, pulls the video and offers it to download at a selection of resolutions depending on the video. Downloads are fast and you will soon have an MP4 copy of the video on your device.

OnlineVideoConverter
OnlineVideoConverter is an alternative to Savefrom.net that kind of works with Dailymotion. Some videos convert and are available to download immediately. Some only work if you use the permalink from the Share tab on the video page. Some don’t work at all. If you don’t want to download an app and Savefrom.net is busy, you could try this one.
Use a browser extension to download videos from Dailymotion
There are a couple of browser extensions that work well too. While there is a download, it is a tiny one and is sandboxed to the browser. The two I use work with the majority of Dailymotion videos as well as videos from other platforms.

Download Videos From Google Chrome
The Dailymotion Video Downloader for Chrome does exactly what it says it does. It installs into Chrome and enables you to download videos. There is also an Opera and Yandex version of it. The extension works well aside from asking you to rate it before you use it and not naming the video correctly. Rename the video as soon as it downloads and everything works fine.
NetVideoHunter for Firefox
NetVideoHunter does the same thing except for Firefox. It is the only download extension that I can find that consistently works for Dailymotion. It also works with other video websites too which is a bonus. The extension offers multiple formats and works well. Updates are slow though so if you update Firefox and the plugin stops working, uninstall and install again. I had to do this for Firefox 57 but all is working now.

Use VLC to download videos from Dailymotion
Regular readers of my work on TechJunkie will already know that I rate VLC very highly indeed. I would go as far as to say it is the best media player on the internet bar none. It is free too. As well as playing media you have installed locally, it can also access and download online video.
- Download VLC if you haven’t already.
- Select Media from the top menu.
- Select Open Network Stream and paste the video URL into the box and hit Play.
- Let the video start and then select Tools from the menu and then Codec Information.
- Copy the URL at the bottom of the information window and paste it into your browser. The video will either automatically download or will be enabled for the right click and Save As… dialog box.
I’ll be honest, it is rare that I see anything on Dailymotion that I would ever want to keep but very occasionally there will be a song, review or something that I want to go back to without having to search for it. Any of the above tools will download videos from Dailymotion, YouTube, Vimeo and other video sites but it may take a bit of trial and error.
